Bathymetry

We survey the bed depths of ponds, dam reservoirs and watercourses with sonar – now also with the CHCNAV Apache 4 Pro autonomous survey vessel. From the data we build a digital 3D model of the bed, calculate volumes and, in combination with laser scanning and photogrammetry, determine sediment thicknesses as well.

What it is for

Seeing the bed without draining the reservoir

How much water does the reservoir really hold? How much sediment has to be removed and what will de-silting cost? Bathymetry answers with figures, not estimates.

We survey bed depths with sonar from a vessel and process the measured data into a digital 3D model of the bed surface. The model ties in with the survey of the banks and the surroundings, so a complete picture of the reservoir emerges – from the water surface across the bank edges down to the deepest point.

The CHCNAV Apache 4 Pro autonomous survey vessel makes bathymetric surveying more efficient. The unmanned boat runs along pre-planned profiles, so it maps the bed of dam reservoirs, ponds and watercourses quickly, systematically and with a repeatability that manual navigation cannot offer – while the crew stays safely on the bank. With it we build on many years of experience in surveying below the water surface.

By combining sonar, specialised surveying (including terrestrial laser scanning) and photogrammetric methods we determine sediment thicknesses. It was for this task that we co-developed a measuring apparatus protected by a utility model, under research project TH02030399 of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR).

The outputs serve for planning restoration and de-silting works, hydraulic calculations, estimates of sediment volume and assessment of the capacity of water bodies and hydraulic structures. We collect spatial data from the air, from the ground and below the water surface – and combine them into coherent outputs according to the needs of each project.

How it works

From the water surface to the model of the bed

    Brief and preparation

    We settle the purpose of the survey and the spacing of the profiles; we arrange access to the water.

    Surveying on the water

    Sonar runs along the profiles, complemented by a survey of the banks and the shallows.

    Processing

    We build the model of the bed and, where relevant, evaluate the sediment thicknesses.

What you ask us most.

By a combination of methods: sonar surveys the present bed surface, and a special apparatus (co-developed under TAČR project TH02030399) establishes the level of the original bed. The difference between the two surfaces gives the thickness and volume of the sediment.

Yes, we deploy the apparatus from a small vessel – we survey ponds, fire-water reservoirs and stretches of watercourses. In very shallow parts we complement the sonar with point measurement.

It states the volume of retained water at a given water level – a basic input for manipulation rules, the assessment of retention during floods and water management planning.

The Apache 4 Pro runs the planned profiles on its own – the survey is systematic, repeatable (in the next epoch it follows the same lines) and safer, because the crew stays on the bank. It is used on dam reservoirs as well as on small water bodies that a conventional boat reaches only with difficulty.
